The Oatmeal Wars?

Posted on December 19, 2008

Who would've thought that coffee and juice bars would be fighting to bring you something you probably spent your childhood avoiding?  And that it would be amazingly successful?  By now you've probably seen oatmeal on Starbucks' pastry shelves.  Now, Jamba Juice is getting in the game with fresh (vs. Starbucks instant version) of oatmeal.  Read the AdAge story here.

I'm all for healthy breakfast and I think it's a great move by both chains.  GenXYZ seems to be a busy, hardworking bunch and if I'm representative of the group at all, we're constantly trying to grab something fresh and healthy as we juggle a million things in our hands.

It was especially ingenious as AdAge points out, for Jamba to launch the oatmeal on a blistery cold Chicago day.  That might not have gone over so well here, but I'm sure the Californians will be on board with the slow-cooked organic oatmeal message.

So, thanks for reversing the fast breakfast trend that seemed to be falling the way of pastries and donuts, SBUX and Jamba.  Keep the healthy food coming.

P.S.  In the spirit of "drinks have calories" I am sure there's a Today Show story in the works right now about how oatmeal seems like the healthy choice, but will undoubtedly make you fat.  Guess we'll have to wait and see what investigative journalism has to say.
